Guyana has been named number one yet again, this time winning the “Best in Sustainable Tourism” award at the Latin America Travel Association (LATA) Achievement Awards in London, hosted at Chelsea’s Football Club.
The announcement was made during Europe’s largest business to business travel conference ‘Experience Latin America’ which focuses on the Latin America Region. The LATA Achievement Award recognizes destinations, individuals and/or companies that have made a considerable contribution to the development of sustainable travel in Latin America.
Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Brian Mullis in a release from the Authority expressed his satisfaction with Guyana attaining the award.
“Guyana has expended considerable effort in recent years not only to develop an eco-friendly tourism product but also to incorporate sustainable tourism best practice into all aspects of its tourism strategy, policy, planning, and programming. Guyana is committed to maximizing the positive socio-economic and conservation outcomes from tourism and it is a tremendous honor for us to receive this award in recognition of that,” he expressed.
The release attributes Guyana’s victory to its “impressive sustainable tourism practices and community-led tourism framework which promotes job creation helps preserve local traditions and customs promotes low-carbon lifestyles and provides a livelihood for indigenous communities.”
This comes just months after Guyana also claimed the top spot as the number one ‘Best in Eco-Tourism’ destination in the world and one of the top 10 sustainable destinations by the Green Destination Foundation at the International Tourism Market (Internationale Tourismus-Börse, ITB) in Berlin.
The winning of these accolades shows the rapid growth and development that the Tourism sector has undergone over the last few years, something that the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) has credited to the work of Director of Marketing and Manufacturing, Dominic Gaskin, during his tenure as Minister of Business with Responsibility for Tourism.
